Premiering at the number one spot for Film Of The Year is Martin Scorsese’s first ever 3D flick Hugo. Not just for kids, the tale of a boy who lives alone in a Paris railway station rekindles the innocence and wonder of childhood in a delightful film, full of comedy, imagination and heart.

To celebrate another successful year of on-screen magic, LOVEFiLM – Europe’s largest subscription service with over 1.9 million film fan members – reveals the top ten must-see movies of 2011.

New York based drama Margaret comes in second as Anna Paquin gives a staggering performance as a young woman who witnesses a bus accident and the aftermath that unfolds thereafter.

Jumping into third is Danny Boyle’s extreme sports’ nightmare 127 Hours where James Franco reconstructs the true story of a mountain climber who resorts to desperate measures when he becomes trapped canyoneering.

Fourth place is captured by The Guard as a small town policeman outwits not only a ring of international drug smugglers, but his own colleagues on the force in this comedy-cum-thriller.

Speeding into fifth spot is retro action flick Drive as Hollywood stunt man (played by actor of the moment Ryan Gosling) moonlights as a getaway man and steers straight into drama as a heist goes wrong.

Sci-fi drama Melancholia lands in sixth place when the relationship between two sisters is challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide into Earth. Is this the end of the world? Who knows? What we do know is that this is an on-screen dream from legendary Danish director Lars von Trier.

Next is action thriller Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Full of suspense our seventh flick takes film fans on a journey to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train through a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man. For those that missed it first time round or just want to relive the drama, it’s available to watch now via LOVEFiLM Instant.

Continuing our apocalypse theme Take Shelter makes it into eighth. Critically acclaimed actor Michael Shannon has established himself as the go-to guy for crazy and he is in his element here as his character questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm – or himself.

In penultimate place is sporting screenplay Moneyball with Brad Pitt’s soulful portrait of baseball manager Billy Bonds putting everything on the line for his team.

At number ten on the best of 2011 list is True Grit. The Coen brothers’ western has villainous humour, cranky, colourful characters, adventure and a second-to-none landscape. Not forgetting a 13-year-old girl with real gumption.

98 PER CENT OF CHRISTMAS FILMS WILL BE REPEATS

Brace yours’elf for a sleigh full of all-too-familiar films this festive season – as LOVEFiLM reveals a whopping 98 per cent of films screened on TV this Christmas will be repeats.

UK viewers settling in front of their TVs for a bit of seasonal cheer can expect a heavy dose of Déjå-View – out of the 656 films to be screened on Freeview and Satellite channels over the three-day festive period (24th – 26th December), 643 will be re-runs with only 13 premieres – a decrease of over 19 per cent from last year.

LOVEFiLM commissioned the research to highlight the fact that members don’t have to rely on repetitive TV listings to get their festive fix this year. With LOVEFiLM Instant – the movie streaming service – film fans can watch what they want, when they want.

Despite the total number of films available across Freeview and satellite channels increasing by 23 per cent, the majority will have been screened before. Freeview channels will have the lion’s share of premieres with 11 per cent of screened films never seen before on terrestrial TV. Satellite channels lag behind this year with a pitiful total of two premieres, both of which will be broadcast on Christmas Day.

LOVEFiLM has a huge catalogue of films to watch instantly via a range of platforms this Christmas – to act as a welcome remedy to predictable TV schedules. This year film fans have exclusive access to favourites like Unknown, The Hangover, Gran Torino and The Dark Knight.

Helen Cowley, Editor of LOVEFiLM, commented:
“It comes as no surprise that the Christmas TV viewing schedule is stuffed to the brim with repeats, but research suggests that viewers now have less choice than ever before – despite having more channels to choose from.”

“LOVEFiLM provides the perfect antidote to tired TV schedules. We have thousands of films, including exclusives not available on any other subscription service, available to watch instantly. Whether you choose to stream at home via your Xbox, PS3™, on the go via iPad, direct to your living room through your internet connected TV or simply on your laptop via the LOVEFiLM website, you’ll be able to choose your own viewing schedule – watching what you want, when you want and how you want. It’s all the very best of Christmas viewing, on your terms”

Broadcasting history will be made this Sunday as LOVEFiLM and the Moët British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) team up to bring the prestigious ceremony directly into the homes of films fans across the UK for the first time.

The exclusive partnership will see LOVEFiLM, Europe’s largest subscription service – streaming movies and TV episodes over the Internet and sending DVDs by post – broadcast the awards live over the Internet from interactive red carpet interviews to a first look at the night’s winners.

Now in their 14th year, the BIFAs set out to celebrate independently funded British filmmaking, to honour new talent and to promote British films and filmmaking to a wider audience – and until now have never been available to the general public. BIFA have chosen LOVEFiLM as their broadcast partner and the home of this exclusive content.

As well as streaming the ceremony, LOVEFiLM will also be covering the red carpet and the winner’s tent, ensuring that viewers can immerse themselves in the atmosphere and emotions of the night. Film fans will be given the opportunity to ask big Hollywood names such as Vanessa Redgrave, Gemma Arterton, Ralph Fiennes, Imelda Staunton, Kenneth Branagh and Oscar winning director, Danny Boyle their questions on the red carpet through Twitter and Facebook.

Simon Calver, CEO of LOVEFiLM, said:
“We are very proud to have been chosen by BIFA to stream the awards live into the living rooms of film fans over more traditional approaches. We are always looking for new ways to bring the world of film to those who are passionate about it, and working with the BIFA team is a fantastic way of achieving this. LOVEFiLM will be the place to be this Sunday for film fans as some of Hollywood’s brightest take to the stage to accept their awards.”

Tessa Collinson and Johanna von Fischer, Joint Directors of the Moët British Independent Film Awards, said:
“The BIFAs aim is to celebrate British and independent film and we could not imagine a more fitting broadcast partner than LOVEFiLM to help us achieve this. The LOVEFiLM team will have access-all-areas on the night, so make sure you log on and tune in to find out what is going on at one of the industry’s most respected award ceremonies.”

The Moët British Independent Film Awards will be streamed live at www.lovefilm.com/MBIFA, with red carpet coverage taking place between 6pm and 7pm, and the awards starting at 8pm.

LOVEFiLM, Europe’s largest subscription service – streaming movies and TV episodes over the internet and sending DVDs by post – offers an unlimited package which includes limitless streaming and DVDs for just £9.99 a month.

With the Games less than 270 days away, it would seem that the Olympics are already having an effect on the imaginations of film fans everywhere. The sprint-vertising campaign comes after a quarter of film fans polled by LOVEFiLM voted Forrest Gump their favourite on-screen runner (26 per cent), followed by Run Fat Boy Run’s Dennis in second place (15 per cent) and Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (ten per cent).

Top Ten Film Runners:
1. Tom Hanks – Forrest Gump (26 per cent)
2. Simon Pegg – Run Fatboy Run (15 per cent)
3. Johnny Depp – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (ten per cent)
4. Sylvester Stallone – Rocky Balboa (nine per cent)
5. Ewan McGregor – Trainspotting (seven per cent)

No wonder we’ve signed up Jamie.’’

HOME ALONE BURGLAR IS THE BEST SCREAM IN FILM

According to film fans it is not masked-psychopaths or terrifying poltergeists that prompt their victims to let out the most blood-curdling screams but rather having a tarantula crawl across your face, as Marv (Daniel Stern) from classic family film Home Alone proves by claiming the title for the best scream in film.

To celebrate the scariest day of the year – Halloween – on Monday, LOVEFiLM – Europe’s largest subscription service streaming movies and TV episodes over the internet and sending DVDs by post – asked over 800 film fans to identify the most bone-tingling shrieks in film, with the clumsy burglar earning 28 per cent of the votes and claiming the top spot.

Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal shower scene from Psycho missed out on the top spot but clawed its way into second (12 per cent). Hotel bathrooms are always risky business, but none more so than those at the Bates Motel, as Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) discovered when she was stabbed to death by a shadowy, mysterious figure.

It appears that knife-wielding psychopaths are amongst the best at evoking spine-tingling howls, as Casey (Drew Barrymore) from everyone’s favourite scary movie, Scream, claimed third place with 11 per cent of the votes, narrowly missing out on the runner up spot.

Wendy Torrance (Shelly Duvall) screeches her way into fourth place (nine per cent) in Stanley Kubrick’s psychological horror, The Shining. Based on the novel by the master of horror, Stephen King, the classic “Heeere’s Johnny!” scene with Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall certainly deserves its place in the top five.

From classic horror to a modern day supernatural blockbuster next as Katie Featherston’s final screams in 2007’s Paranormal Activity completes the top five (eight per cent). Filmed entirely on their home video recorder, Paranormal Activity documents the disturbed nights shared between Katie and her boyfriend Micah, as a terrifying demonic presence haunts the happy couple.

Another film recorded entirely on camcorder follows closely behind, as Heather Donahue’s chilling screams in the closing scene of the 1998 record-breaking The Blair Witch Project (six per cent) narrowly miss out on the top half of the table. Heather edged out Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre who placed seventh (four per cent).

In eighth is the ‘scream queen’ herself, Jamie Lee Curtis (three per cent), for her portrayal of Laurie Strode in Halloween as she tries to escape her psychopathic, mask-wearing, knife-toting brother. Her hair-raising shriek as she falls down the stairs whilst fleeing for her life certainly contributed to her being crowned scream royalty.

Rounding up the top ten are two screams both caused by animals, one living, one dead. Sam Quint’s (Robert Shaw) very lengthy and blood-riddled wail as he is torn limb from limb by a gigantic great white shark in Jaws earns him ninth place with two per cent of the vote.

Finally, Jack Woltz’s (John Marley) shock of waking up to find the decapitated head of his prized racing horse in his bed in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic, The Godfather, earns him the last spot in the top ten (one per cent).

The Top Ten On-Screen Screams:
1. Marv (Daniel Stern) – Home Alone (28 per cent)
2. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) – Psycho (12 per cent)
3. Casey (Drew Barrymore) – Scream (11 per cent)
4. Wendy Torrance (Shelly Duvall) – The Shining (nine per cent)
5. Katie Featherston – Paranormal Activity (eight per cent)
6. Heather Donahue – The Blair Witch Project (six per cent)
7. Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (four per cent)
8. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) – Halloween (three per cent)
9. Sam Quint (Robert Shaw) – Jaws (two per cent)
10. Jack Woltz (John Marley) – Godfather (one per cent)

Other – 16 per cent

Helen Cowley, Editor of LOVEFiLM, commented:
“On Halloween there is nothing better than a spine-tingling film to make you scream – but with so many classic horror moments and blood-curdling shrieks available, we wanted to find out who film fans deemed the best in class.

“The results were really surprising! With classic tormentors such as Michael Myers, Norman Bates and Leatherface in the mix, you wouldn’t expect a scream caused by a poor old spider to get the most votes.

“Film fans can enjoy all of their favorite wails, whines, screams and screeches with LOVEFiLM this Halloween with some of the best horror movies of all time available on DVD, Blu-ray or ‘screamed’ instantly via the LOVEFiLM player.”
