TWILIGHT STAR TOP OF ANNUAL TOP 20 ACTRESSES UNDER 30 LIST
Sullen Twilight star Kristen Stewart finally has something to smile about after beating the likes of Michelle Williams and Brit star Carey Mulligan to be named the Top Actress Under 30 of the past year in a new talent list published today.
LOVEFiLM, Europe’s largest subscription service streaming movies and TV episodes over the Internet and sending DVDs by post has released its annual list of the year’s female talent leading the way in Hollywood based on a combination of momentum and both critical and commercial success.
With both indie and mainstream success under her belt thanks to performances in films including Adventureland, Sundance 2010 film Welcome To The Rileys and of course the Twilight Saga films, Stewart (20 years old) climbs eight places from her 2009 position to take the top spot and will next be seen in the third Twilight film Eclipse in July and as lead Joan Jett in The Runaways later this summer.
In second after climbing one place is eclectic Australian actress Michelle Williams (29) who scored highly for 2010 Sundance favourite Blue Valentine, a grisly appearance in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and her performance in Wendy and Lucy. Up next for Williams is the portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn.
Tim Burton’s titular Alice in Wonderland, another Aussie Mia Wasikowska (20) came in at third place in the talent list for her performance in the fantasy film and also her role in Defiance opposite Daniel Craig.
An Education boosted Brit star Carey Mulligan (25) into fourth position after she received both an Oscar nod for her performance plus a BAFTA win. Climbing 17 places on last year, UK viewers will next see Mulligan in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, opposite Keira Knightley in Never Let Me Go plus potentially the lead in the Hollywood remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
The first new entry in the chart belongs to bright-eyed American actress Amanda Seyfried (24) who shone in Mamma Mia! before making a name for herself during the past 12 months in films including Jennifer’s Body, Dear John and new release Letters To Juliet.
Slipping two places at six is The Wolfman star Emily Blunt (27) who missed out on more mainstream success after giving up a role in Iron Man 2 to Scarlett Johansson due to filming commitments for Gulliver’s Travels. Bright Star and Sucker Punch actress Abbie Cornish (27) achieved seventh place for the second year running.
Also dropping two places is Juno star Ellen Page (23) who received critical, if not box office success for her role in Drew Barrymore’s directional debut Whip It. Her star may however rise again next year thanks to her upcoming supporting role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Christopher Nolan’s Inception.
As the second new entry into the list at nine, former ‘Bond girl’ and actress of the moment Gemma Arterton (24) received widespread exposure if not all-round praise during the year for roles in The Prince of Persia, Clash of the Titans and The Disappearance of Alice Creed, while completing the top ten is Slumdog Millionaire beauty Freida Pinto (25), next up in the Woody Allen film You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger amongst others.
Hoping for better things since Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones is lead actress Saoirse Ronan (just 16) in 11th, with a new entry at 12 in quirky Twilight and Up In The Air star Anna Kendrick (24) who introduces a comic touch to the Top 20. She is next on the big screen in Eclipse and also appears as Scott’s sister in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World due out in August.
Last year’s number two star Keira Knightley (25) drops 11 places to 13 after a relatively quiet year spent treading the boards in West End play The Misanthrope, while ‘veteran’ actress Natalie Portman (still only 29) falls nine places after lukewarm reactions to films including Brothers and Hesher.
Sultry Scarlett Johansson (25) earned a welcome boost from Iron Man 2 to remain in the list at 15th despite a drop of seven places on last year with lads’ favourite Megan Fox (24) coming up against a backlash of criticism after Jennifer’s Body and Transformers 2 – down three at 16 from 13.
Kirsten Dunst (28) is in 17th after a seemingly quiet year however the actress has a slew of films due out in the coming year so will be busy worldwide promoting movies including On The Road and All Good Things. Emma Stone (21) of Zombieland and Superbad is named at 18.
Anne Hathaway’s (27) performance as the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland was the only saving grace to stop the star dropping off the list, despite topping the list last year with an Oscar nod for Rachel Getting Married. We won’t mention Bride Wars or Valentine’s Day…
Finally the last new entry in the Top 20 Actresses Under 30 list at 20 is Alia Shawkatt (19) who film fans recently watched in Whip It and will also see starring alongside Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in The Runaways. Fans will also recognise her from US show Arrested Development and an impressive performance in indie film Amreeka.
Names dropping out of the list this year include Sienna Miller, Evan Rachel Wood and Zooey Deschanel.

Helen Cowley, Editor at LOVEFiLM commented:
“It’s hugely impressive to see such a young list of actresses making their mark this year. Only three of the top ten and one of the top five are over 25 and it’s also clear that Brit actresses are having a real impact in Hollywood with the likes of Carey, Emily and Gemma leading the charge. Top star Kristen is a shrewd judge of roles with some clever career choices in recent years, so it’ll be interesting to see which direction she goes in after her time as Bella Swan comes to an end.
With LOVEFiLM’s choice of over 67,000 titles plus more to watch online, you can watch all of the fine female performances and continue to track their careers.”
