LOVEFiLM, Europe’s leading subscription-based film streaming and DVD rental company, has signed a commercial deal with the British Film Institute (BFI) allowing streaming rights to a selection of BFI titles plus the responsibility for selling its online ad inventory.
Extending LOVEFiLM’s fast growing streaming content with the introduction of classic British documentary and feature films, existing members can now access highlights from the BFI catalogue, including Sympathy For The Devil and Distant Voices, Still Lives for free as part of their subscription packages.
Additionally, allowing on-site advertising content for the first time, the BFI has handed control to the LOVEFiLM in-house advertising sales department, which is tasked first with selling house advertising including leader boards and SKY formats, before a decision is made on extending this to interactive advertising.
The deal marks the first time that the LOVEFiLM team has represented another website.
Simon Calver, Chief Executive Officer at LOVEFiLM, commented, “We’re thrilled to be able to gain rights to such highly respected work from the BFI’s extensive library of content to add to our streaming service for customers. We are equally excited about handling the BFI’s first ever site advertising and with our unique in-house knowledge of film related ad sales we are well placed for this work. We look forward to building their site with advertising that complements such an established and respected brand.”
Amanda Nevill, Director of the BFI, added, ”Increasing access to the BFI and finding new revenue streams are two priorities we are always looking to tie together, so it’s great that we can offer LOVEFiLM subscribers a chance to see our films in such a dynamic way online. We are particularly excited to have selected highlights from our features and shorts catalogue because for the first time we have a new means to showcase the films made by world-class directors such as Ridley Scott and Stephen Frears when they were at the very start of their careers. We look forward to adding more titles in the near future.”
Commenting on the advertising sales deal with LOVEFiLM, the BFI’s Director of Marketing, Gail Cohen, said, “We are particularly pleased to launch our ad sales platform with such a strong partner that has so many parallels with our own market and audiences.”
