LOVEFiLM NAMES SUPERBAD NERD MOST LOVABLE MOVIE GEEK
Superbad’s fake-ID toting bad boy McLovin has beaten off the bullies to be named the kingpin of geeks by film fans.
To celebrate the release of radically pro-geek movie The Social Network LOVEFiLM, Europe’s largest subscription service streaming movies and TV episodes over the Internet and sending DVDs by post, asked over 2,000 film fans to vote for the Most Lovable Movie Geek of all time on the big screen.
Old-enough-to-party McLovin, real name Fogell, pulled in 22 per cent of votes and beat off some stiff competition from well established uber-geeks of the film world to take the number one place in the LOVEFiLM poll.
Listless star of 2004’s Napoleon Dynamite follows up in second place (17 per cent), most likely due to his unforgettable dance routine to Jamiroquai’s ‘Canned Heat’ in the cult classic.
Dude, it’s like Garth from Wayne’s World at number three. The air guitar hero was voted far more nerd-worthy than his partner in crime Wayne who didn’t feature in the top ten, taking 15 per cent of votes in the poll. Totally excellent!
Gadget freak and Bond-loving Richard ‘Data’ Wang from 1985’s adventure classic The Goonies grappled onto fourth place in the list with 13 per cent of votes. The inventive teen’s gizmos may have seemed useless to the rest of the gang but in fact saved their bacon on several occasions – proving that this particular geek was nothing short of a lifesaver.
Revealing that all geeks can have a surprising alter-ego, Superman’s bespectacled hero Clark Kent swoops into the poll at number five. He may be geeky, but he certainly knows what to do when it comes to saving the world – winning him ten per cent of votes in the process.
Another nerd with a hidden secret up next – Spiderman’s Peter Parker may seem to share something in common with Mark Zuckerburg, but these are very different webs we’re talking about. Parker’s ‘Spidey Powers’ swung him sixth place in the poll (eight per cent).
Juno heart-throb Paulie Bleeker, played by proud nerd favourite Michael Cera, jogs into seventh place with six per cent in the poll, while desk-bound Milton from 1999’s Office Space slumps into eighth place (four per cent).
Weird Science super-nerd, Gary Wallace takes ninth place in the list (three per cent) for accidentally bringing a computer simulation of the perfect woman to life. From perfection to perplexing, the world’s most imperfect woman-turned-beauty queen, Gracie Hart from 2000’s Miss Congeniality, struts into tenth and final place in the poll (one per cent).
Napoleon Dynamite, Superman & Miss Congeniality 1 & 2 are all available to watch instantly online now via the LOVEFiLM Player.

Helen Cowley, Editor at LOVEFiLM commented:
““Everyone loves the classic movie geek, so it’s great to see a good mix of old-school and more recent film nerds ruling the top ten list. Mark Zuckerburg in The Social Network is a classic example of a geek who has had the last laugh – an online hero whose story was so great, they made a film out of it! “
