You will be working on a high load, enterprise level Linux / Apache / MySQL / Perl platform and will need excellent communication skills as well as proven technical expertise. We value both highly structured working as well as a more ‘hands on’ approach.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior Perl/MySQL developer who wishes to build managerial experience while utilizing his/her technical expertise.

The successful candidate will provide line management for a team of Perl/SQL & XHTML/CSS/JS/Mason developers as well as technical responsibility for project delivery. Work delivery is undertaken in the context of quick planning cycles to support important commercial initiatives.

Responsibilities & Activities

•              Implementation & maintenance of existing & new products and services

•              Challenging development work for LOVEFiLM’s streaming services from operational infrastructure, to API development and integration with the website and consumer electronic devices

•              Contributing to the quality of delivery by working within our development, integration, test and release processes

•              Line managing a team of mixed skilled development staff, to include assessing performance, coordinating time off and arranging training.

•              Liaising with non-technical business staff in order to assess the nature and impact of future work

•              Leading and taking part in recruitment of technical development staff

•              Prioritising and allocating development time to support existing systems and processes that drive the LOVEFiLM business

•              To work with team staff to support 3rd party suppliers to ensure that technical deliverables are built in accordance with company standards

•              Regularly reporting to the Development Manager on the status of team activity

Essential Skills & Experience:

•              At least 5 years professional experience of application development using object oriented Perl on Unix platforms, particularly Linux, Apache, mod_perl, MySQL or other widely used SQL database product

•              Demonstrable awareness of the value of key programming best practice such as unit testing using common test harness software and documentation standards, including client-side development technologies.

•              Awareness and expertise with existing and emerging LAMP technologies and the potential to enhance performance and robustness of LOVEFiLM ’s services and productivity

•              Experience of managing technical teams with a focus on timely completion of quality deliverables, ideally within an iterative or incremental development cycle

•              Excellent verbal & written communication skills and experience of effective tools for task and project management

Preferred Skills & Experience:

•              Some experience of working in another OO programming language such as Java or C++.

•              Some familiarity with front end technologies such as Mason, PHP, JavaScript, XHTML, CSS

•              Awareness of principals of managing development processes with an interest in agile development practices eg. XP, Scrum

•              Experience of working collaboratively non-technical business staff in order to agree requirements timescales and acceptance criteria.

KPIs

•              The company operates a performance related pay (PRP) scheme which requires the setting of quarterly objectives and review.

•              PRP objectives are intended to align individual activity with the quarterly goals of the business and staff are measured against the extent to which they have met these goals.
